The Bulletin (December 2007)

Some Baroque composers are a little too forcefully resuscitated these days and quickly slip back into oblivion after a fex recordings. This is certainly not a fate I wish for Pez, a German musician from the turn of the 18th century whose name and music were perfectly obscure until Les Muffatti, a group of talented young Belgian players, dug up six of his orchestral works for this recording. The CD is a revelation as much for the poised exuberance of Pez's music, which reminded me of Purcell and Telemann, as for the musicians' fresh and spot-on interpretation. The composer also produced an opera. Now that's another revival I'm eagerly anticipating.
