American Record Guide (November/December 2005)

It is hard to argue with the idea that the Bach flute sonatas are some of his best chamber music, especially the magnificent B-minor. There are four here, presented as the « authentic » sonatas: E and A major and E and B minor. The idea of authenticity is not easy to convey in brief terms. The liner notes are helpful and informative on this subject. I will simply say this: this is a wonderful period-instrument recording, a real gem of a performance and a reference for anyone looking to explore ideas about performance practice. The remarkable and rich counterpoint of the B-minor is a challenge for modern instruments and more so for the flute of Bach's time. Csalog and Spanyi nail this music with grace and tremendous attention to detail — quite an accomplishment when you consider the difficulty. I will leave it to others to argue whether this qualifies as « definitive » Bach style. I will keep enjoying and studying this fabulous performance.
